latino outreach.

For many, United Way is a link between problems and solutions. Often, when people need information or help regarding community services, the first place they think to call is United Way.

Through the Information and Referral Service's Latino Outreach program, a Latino coordinator assists Spanish-speaking citizens with valuable information about where to get help. The coordinator is available to interpret for other agencies without a bi-lingual staff when referrals are made.

Latino Outreach works with the Statesville Housing Authority and local financial institutions for first-time Latino home buyers to promote the benefits of security and financial management programs that banks offer residents.

In addition, new Spanish-speaking residents are offered a Latino Outreach program designed to help assimilate them into full participation of life in Iredell County where they may share their many skills and talents.

early learning.
United Way knows the value of early learning and the influence parents and caregivers have on the life of a child. Partnering with the Iredell County Partnership for Young Children, United Way received a grant from the Iredell Community Foundation to implement a Born Learning campaign in Iredell County.

The grant of $9,400 will provide excellent materials - teaching tools- for parents, grandparents and other care providers for children birth to five years of age.

Iredell's Born Learning campaign will promote awareness that busy, hard-working parents can use in "doable" action steps for everyday activities to expand the learning of young children at such a critical age. The campaign will assure parents that it's easy and fun to turn everyday moments into quality learning moments.

Backed by national public service TV, radio and print media through the Ad Council and Civitas, Iredell's campaign will strengthen the power of educating our youngest citizens. United Way and ICPYC know that investing in a child's success early on is critical. Research shows the tangible results - adults with greater success in life, fewer invovlements in crime, higher incomes and higher education levels.
