The American Red Cross helps residents of Iredell
County prevent, prepare for, or cope with disasters and emergency situations.
- Blood Services: Through scheduling local
blood drives, the American Red Cross strives to secure enough donors of all blood
types to maintain an adequate supply of blood and blood products to meet the needs
of patients in our community.
- Armed Forces
Emergency Services: Around-the-clock, around-the-world emergency communications
link the men and women of our armed forces with their families during times of
personal emergencies. Services include birth and death notifications and travel
assistance to be with family members during emergencies.
- Disaster
Services: In the event of "large disasters," often natural disasters
such as hurricanes, ice storms, etc., the American Red Cross opens and staffs
emergency shelters throughout the community. With "small disasters,"
such as single family fires, the agency assists victims with food, temporary shelter,
household furnishings, or personal goods such as clothing. Referrals are also
made to other community service agencies which further assist disaster victims.
- Health
Education Services: Health education programs teach families in our community
CPR and First Aid, HIV/AIDS Education and Water Safety.

Youth Incentive Program (YIP) Serving in Iredell & Alexander Counties, offers competency based life skills sessions of Survival Skills for Youth, ages 11-19, in danger of exiting the educational system without completion, and who are in need of guidance and training to achieve a law-abiding, productive and healthy life. The program stresses respect for self and others, along with teamwork, both in our local after school programming and in our private group settings. YIP works to remove barriers to success and produce outcomes to empower youth to set and achieve their goals, as well as realize their future potential. Family issues, peer pressure, education, healthy choices, legal responsibilities, career opportunities, traffic safety, tobacco reality, and substance abuse education are addressed. Youth also engage in ‘hands-on’ experiential service learning opportunities that connect youth to needs addressed by local agencies and opportunities for service as a way of life. Gang awareness, prevention and intervention issues for youth and families are also addressed in YIP. APO also offers Impulse Control Exercises (I.C.E.) for youth and families, offering skills that encourage ‘thinking’ before speaking and acting. Topics relate to recognition of personal and family needs and strengths, understanding consequences of negative behaviors and benefits of positive behaviors, and accepting accountability to others as reality for our lives. APO also offers Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Groups for active clients with needs in this area. Referrals are accepted from self, parents, school staff, school resource officers, other law enforcement, probation, juvenile court counselors, attorneys, judges, truancy court, faith-based groups, and other community agencies.
Re-Entry Services (RES) provides a single point of re-entry for ex-offenders living in Iredell County and surrounding areas. We assist with direct services and referrals to areas such as housing (emergency, transitional and long-term), employability skills, job retention, re-establishing identity, substance abuse treatment, mental and emotional health, family re-unification when possible, life-skills including finances, cognitive behavior, education, clothing and food needs, spiritual enrichment, and mentoring. Fifth
Street Shelter Ministries provides basic necessities for our community's needy
citizens through a variety of programs: -
Night Shelter: For the more chronically homeless. Some of our guests are unemployed with varying levels of work skills, and little work available that will pay a living wage. Many of our night shelter guests are mentally ill and non-compliant with their treatment plan. Others are severe substance abusers and some are dually diagnosed. With the lack of an adequate substance abuse treatment program in our county, we many times find ourselves band-aiding a situation. The current state of mental health treatment in North Carolina is much less than desirable, therefore more individuals with serious mental illness are homeless. Upon coming into the night shelter, guests have 28 days and then must either leave or move up to Level 2 which is more structured and with more requirements, including participating in classes, work detail, etc.
-
Transitional Housing: After guests have fulfilled the criteria necessary for Level 2, they are ready to move to Level 3 - transitional housing. While being enrolled in this program, both short-term and long-term goals are set with weekly meetings with staff to assess progress in meeting these goals. When a guest is employed, 25% of the monthly income will be placed into a savings account to be used towards deposits when guest is ready to move into their own living situation. Networking with other helping agencies to assist with credit counseling, budgeting, job training, parenting, AA/NA meetings, etc. are incorporated weekly into the program and requires mandatory participation by those enrolled in Transitional Housing. For those unable to work, reasonable and attainable goals are set and monitored closely.
-
Transitional Housing-Resident Staff: While the same guidelines of Transitional Housing apply, these individuals also have responsibilities related to the running of the shelter program such as night phone, laundry, monitoring night shelter, etc. This gives an opportunity to build a good job reference for those needing a credible work history as well as giving more time to develop better life skills necessary for success. Length of stay at this level varies according to the individual needs.
-
My Sister’s House: This program includes shelter for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, on-site counselors that facilitates group sessions for women and sessions for children as well as individual sessions. Our victim advocate is responsible for meeting women and children at emergency rooms and law enforcement centers and accompanying them through court proceedings. Our 24-hour crisis-line is always answered by a crisis line trained person capable of providing needed information and referrals. Domestic violence and sexual assault services are available to anyone, not just those residing at My Sister’s House.
-
Soup Kitchen: Our kitchen is open twice daily to all in need. Additionally, we provide a breakfast for everybody in transitional housing and night shelters. The nutritious food provided is vital to the health of homeless children and adults and especially to persons who abuse alcohol and/or drugs who likely would not get adequate nutrition from any other source.
-
Healthcare/Case Management: Our shelter nurse provides nurse clinics daily, and assists our guests in finding affordable healthcare and accessing prescription medications. We are an active part of organizations that address the needs of the uninsured in our community. The case manager meets regular with guests and assists with both short term and long term goal planning. Both the nurse and case manager work to provide educational opportunities for our guests, including prevention and treatment for healthcare issues, as well as life skills training.
-
The Clothing Closet: Almost every person entering our shelter program requires a set of good, warm (or cool) clothes. We go them two better by providing a minimum of three good sets of clothing. We are also able to give our guests household items when they move into their own homes. We rely totally on donations from the community for this service.

Girl Scouts of the USA is the world's preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls—all girls—where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adult volunteers, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives, like leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own self-worth.
In Girl Scouts, girls discover the fun, friendship, and power of girls together. Through a myriad of enriching experiences, such as extraordinary field trips, sports skill-building clinics, community service projects, cultural exchanges, and environmental stewardships, girls grow courageous and strong. Girl Scouting helps girls develop their full individual potential; relate to others with increasing understanding, skill, and respect; develop values to guide their actions and provide the foundation for sound decision-making; and contribute to the improvement of society through their abilities, leadership skills, and cooperation with others.
Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5-17 during any time of the year. We serve more than 5,500 girls of all ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds and abilities in seven counties--Alexander, Ashe, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Iredell and Watauga.
There are nearly 1,200 adult members-both men and women-who serve as leaders, consultants, board members and staff specialists in such areas as development, adult training, outdoor education and administration. Employed executive staff is less than 1% of total adult membership. In partnership with trained and dedicated leaders, girls develop qualities that will serve them all of their lives.
Our award-winning 226-acre camp is located in the Brushy Mountains of Caldwell County. Camp Ginger Cascades features resident, primitive and troop camping, and a lake, pool, challenge course and climbing wall. Three sites are winterized for cold weather outdoor exploration and all units are handicapped-accessible. Throughout the year, our camp is used for troop events, council programs, and business meetings. (back

an area after an emergency has ceased. With its two four-wheel-drive ambulances,
the Troutman Rescue Squad is able to transport paramedics to help handle medical
emergencies in inclement weather. The squad responds to various rescue calls which
require vehicle extrication, victim disentanglement, water rescue and land searches.
