early learning.

United Way of Iredell recognizes the value of early learning and the influence that parents and caregivers have on the life of a child.

Partnering with the Iredell County Partnership for Young Children (ICPYC), United Way received a grant from the Iredell Community Foundation to implement a Born Learning awareness campaign in Iredell County. This joint effort provides teaching tools for parents, grandparents and other care providers for children from birth to five years of age. Children are born learning and everyday is filled with teachable moments in a child's earliest years.

The Born Learning campaign in Iredell County promotes awareness that busy, hard-working parents can use in "doable" action steps for everyday activities to expand the learning of their young children at such a critical age. The United Way & ICPYC awareness and education campaign will assure parents that it's easy and fun to turn everyday moments into quality learning moments.

United Way and the ICPYC know that investing in a child's success early on is critical. Research shows the tangible results — adults with greater success in life, fewer involvements in crime, higher incomes and higher education levels.

Youth Incentive Program (YIP) offers competency based life skill sessions for youth, ages 13-19, in danger of exiting the educational system without completion and who are in need of guidance and training to achieve a law-abiding, productive and healthy life. The program stresses respect for self and others along with teamwork. YIP works to remove barriers to success and produce outcomes that will empower the youth to set and achieve their goals as well as realize their future potential. Information is given to assist youth with everyday family life issues, peer pressure, education, healthy choices, legal responsibilities, career opportunities, traffic safety, tobacco reality and substance abuse education. Referrals can be made by parents, school staff, law enforcement officers, probation, juvenile court counselors, attorneys, judges and other community agencies.

Sentencing Services for the 22nd Judicial District prepares alternative sentencing plans for certain felony offenders facing threat of imprisonment. APO staff work one-on-one with clients, age 16 and up, to research and develop a comprehensive, community-based sentencing plan based on the clients risk and needs. In developing the plan, input is received from the crime victims, family members, arresting officers, probation officers, community service and other community resources. Each plan is presented in court through the client's attorney and given to the judge for approval. Punishment plans include probation, community service, victim restitution, substance abuse treatment, full-time employment, education/job training and a stable residence. If a client breaks the contract, the original sentence can be activated. This program allows more offenders to be punished locally in an effort to help repay the community and crime victims, lower the cost of incarceration and assist the client with services to allow for a positive life change.

Girl Scouts of the USA is the world's preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls-all girls-where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adult volunteers, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives, like leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own self-worth.

In Girl Scouts, girls discover the fun, friendship, and power of girls together. Through a myriad of enriching experiences, such as extraordinary field trips, sports skill-building clinics, community service projects, cultural exchanges, and environmental stewardships, girls grow courageous and strong. Girl Scouting helps girls develop their full individual potential; relate to others with increasing understanding, skill, and respect; develop values to guide their actions and provide the foundation for sound decision-making; and contribute to the improvement of society through their abilities, leadership skills, and cooperation with others.

Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5-17 during any time of the year. We serve more than 5,500 girls of all ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds and abilities in seven counties--Alexander, Ashe, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Iredell and Watauga.

There are nearly 1,200 adult members-both men and women-who serve as leaders, consultants, board members and staff specialists in such areas as development, adult training, outdoor education and administration. Employed executive staff is less than 1% of total adult membership. In partnership with trained and dedicated leaders, girls develop qualities that will serve them all of their lives.

Our award-winning 226-acre camp is located in the Brushy Mountains of Caldwell County. Camp Ginger Cascades features resident, primitive and troop camping, and a lake, pool, challenge course and climbing wall. Three sites are winterized for cold weather outdoor exploration and all units are handicapped-accessible. Throughout the year, our camp is used for troop events, council programs, and business meetings.

In order to graduate, each client is required to complete a 14-course program and a minimum of three contracts of personal studies to develop character and to explore practical ways to face and overcome daily problems and challenges. The group study curriculum is a study of spiritual philosophies as they relate to the greater good of humankind. Program topics include: Loving and Accepting Yourself, Personal Relationships with Others, Spiritual Power and the Supernatural, Understanding the Nature of Addiction, Financial Planning and Budgeting, Interviewing and Job-Related Skills, Attitudes/Temptation, Growing Through Failure, Personal Rights and a variety of religious topics for all faiths.

Priority House is a Christian-based ministry but recognizes the spiritually of all people. We use Christian teachings to emphasize character, kindness and compassion. Alternative spiritual programming is available for other faiths and is a critical component to the overall success of the client.

To date, Priority House of Statesville has graduated 26 men. Of those 26, 22 are still "clean" today. We are proud of an 85% success rate as it reflects the program is working to keep these men and their families healthy.
